AlcoHawk
is the widely used personal
breath alcohol tester in the
market since the year
2000. AlcoHawk™
is the same as the popular
Alcomate CA2000.
AlcoHawk™
is designed based on a
semiconductor oxide sensor
rich in n-type conductivity
charges. When exposed
to the atmosphere, its
surface is oxidized resulting
in fewer number of free
electrons and thus a higher
surface resistance.
Now, If a specific gas such
as ethanol is presented,
a de-oxidizing reaction
will take place that removes
excess oxygen and frees
up electrons and thus
increases the surface
conductivity. This change
in conductivity is measured,
scaled, and quantified
into a percent of Blood
Alcohol Concentration
or BAC.
